1.ASI: Archaeological Survey of India

Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is a department of the Government of India, attached to the Ministry of Culture ,with headquarters in New Delhi. It has 24 regional Circles and 5 Regional Directorates. It was founded in 1861 by Alexander Cunningham who also became its first Director-General ,with the help of the then Viceroy Canning.ASI is the successor of The Asiatic Society of India.It regulates all the archaeological activities in the country as per the provisions of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958 and the Antiquities and Art Treasure Act, 1972.According to the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958, an ‘Ancient Monument’ is defined as follows:-

Ancient Monument means any structure, erection or monument, or any tumulus or place of interment, or any cave, rock-sculpture, inscription or monolith which is of historical, archaeological or artistic interest and which has been in existence for not less than 100 years and includes—

  • Remains of an ancient monument,
  • Site of an ancient monument,
  • Such portion of land adjoining the site of an ancient monument as may be required for fencing or covering in or otherwise preserving such monument, a
  • The means of access to, and convenient inspection of, an ancient monument;”

It defines archaeological site and remains as,

  • Such portion of land adjoining the area as may be required for fencing or covering in or otherwise preserving it, and
  • The means of access to, and convenient inspection of the area

ASI main functions are :-

  • preservation, conservation and environmental development of centrally protected monuments and sites, including World Heritage Monuments and antiquities
  • maintenance of gardens & development of new gardens surrounding centrally protected monuments and sites
  • exploration and excavation of ancient sites
  • specialized study of inscription and various phases of Indian architecture
  • maintenance of Archaeological site Museums
  • Operation of the Antiquities and Art Treasures Act
  • Research and Training in different areas of Archaeology

2.ASI: Assistant Sub-Inspector

It is the entry rank in the officer grade in the police and paramilitary services of India

  • Assistant sub-inspector (ASI) is a non-gazetted police officer
  • Assistant Sub-Inspector (A.S.I) is below the post of Sub-Inspector (S.I.).
  • Assistant Sub-Inspector (A.S.I) is above the post of constable in the police force.
  • Assistant Sub-Inspector (A.S.I) cannot file charge-sheet in courts.
  • In police stations, A.S.I is in charge of training centres and armouries.

How to become ASI?

There are two options to become ASI in police

  1. One may recruited as constable and after promotion Head Constable and finally ASI.
  2. Direct recruit as ASI after successfully completion of test. Follwing is the eligibilty conditions for direct appointment.

Eligibility Conditions:

A. Nationality/ Citizenship: A candidate must be either :
(a) a citizen of India, or
(b) a subject of Nepal, or
(c) a subject of Bhutan, or
(d) a Tibetan refugee who came over to India, before the 1st January, 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India, or
(e) a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African Countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania ( Formerly Tanganyika and Zanzibar ), Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia and Vietnam to permanently settle in India.

Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (b), (c), (d) and (e) above shall be a person in whose favor a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Government of India.

B. Age Limit: Candidates’ age limit should be between 20-25 years. There are some exceptions for backward classes and Central Government Civilian Employees as per extant Government order.

C.Essential Qualifications:
A. Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized university or equivalent.
B. For the post of Sub Inspector in Delhi Police only:- Male candidates must possess and also carry a valid Driving License (DL) for LMV (Motorcycle and Car) on the date fixed for Physical Endurance and Standard Tests. Otherwise, they will not be allowed to undergo Physical Endurance and Standard Tests.

1. There shall be no minimum requirement of chest measurement for Female candidates.

Eyesight:
i. The minimum distant vision should be 6/6 and 6/9 of two eyes without correction i.e.without wearing glasses.

ii. The candidate must not have knock-knee, flat, varicose veins, or squint in eyes and should possess high color vision.

iii. They must be in good mental and bodily health and free from any physical defect likely to interfere with the efficient performance of the duties.

Job Profile

ASI Insignia

The rank insignia for an ASI is one star and a red and blue striped ribbon at the outer edge of the shoulder straps. In police stations, the ASI is usually in charge of the armory and in training centers, he is the chief drill officer. In Armed Police and CRPF/BSF/ITBP/CISF he is the second-in-charge after Platoon SI and has been assigned the Staff/Administrative charge of Platoon.
